There is just something about Nicole. Forget – for just a second – about those perfectly squeezable chubby cheeks and her beautiful sparkly eyes. And if you can, put aside her perfectly golden curly locks that frame her precious little face. Then, while you’re at it, toss away any thoughts of her captivating smile and puckery little mouth. If you forget about all that (and I seriously doubt you could), you still have the happiest and most giggly baby I’ve ever met. She’s just one of those babies that stop you in your tracks. And with the gift of sunny mild weather during this wacky winter of ours, I got to capture all of her charm in some golden winter light along the water in coastal Delaware just a few months before her 1st birthday. She even showed off with a little strut – that wobbly wonderfulness that comes with this fantastic age. It shouldn’t be hard to see how adored she is by her mommy and daddy – and I can’t say I blame them. This little angel melted my heart within minutes.

I suppose some will say I’m just doing self-promotion by talking about how important I think photos are. But the truth is, they actually are important. They mean something. They represent something tangible, something significant that has taken place. I’ll prove it by telling a story about how a photograph changed my life.

I met my husband in a bar. Not very romantic from the outside. He intervened during a bar-regular’s pitiful attempt to pick me up, and we spent the rest of the evening arguing about hockey and debating the ridculousness of monogamy. Again, not terribly romantic…but then we got onto the topic of Paris. My first and truest love.

At first I thought it was a carefully calculated story – I mean, any woman would be enchanted by a man’s tale of 5 solo trips to Paris just to soul-search, right? It was all so very… Moleskin and Cafe de Flore and, well, existentialist. But I didn’t fall for it. Not at first. Paris was not a trendy fantasy or the backdrop of a romantic comedy to me. It represented much, much more.

After months of relentless pursuit, he began to break down my barriers. He was handsome, accomplished, thoughtful and genuinely kind. Quite honestly, he is an amazing man. But that moment, the one we all dream about – the one where you just know? Well, one day he led me to his apartment for the first time. I saw something hanging on his wall – one single solitary photo of a remote street in Paris. I was shocked. Not because he had a photo on his wall of Paris (doesn’t everyone?). But it was his photo, one he had taken years before we’d met. When I had moved to Paris as a younger woman, I wandered the streets for nearly 2 months looking for a place to live. I’d had friends (of friends – essentially strangers) who graciously lended couches while I searched, but I was literally and figuratively lost in a foreign city. I’d been denied a bank account, had no phone, had barely contacted my family since I’d arrived and was expected to perform at my job while I carried my every belonging in a back pack – week in and week out. Such experiences change a person, and those times imprint themselves upon you. One day I met an agent about a property on a street that was not of any significance – in fact, I couldn’t even tell you the name of the street today. Worn thin and becoming hopeless, I made my way around the corner I saw the Eiffel Tower – a pillar of majesty and inspiration to me – I took a photo of it, and I carried on.

A few years prior, long before we’d ever met, this man (my now husband) found himself on this same street. And was moved by the same exact scene, for whatever soul-searching reason. We shot it differently, but if you look, you can see the same “Restaurant” sign on the street as the Eifflel Tower peeks out over the buildings in his photo. We both shot it with the same camera, on film. I recognized it immediately, and realized I had found my soul mate.

So you see, life moves us in sometimes unexpected ways. Just like a song or a treasured memory, a photograph matters. Having it printed on your wall matters. Letting it live on and tell it’s own story matters. One changed my life. Because one day I saw something hanging on a wall that took me back to a place I loved – a time that changed me – and that scene was just as meaningful enough to someone else to hang it there.

Happy Valentine’s Day to my sweet husband – a man I love for who he is today and for the man he had become long before we’d ever met.

Nicole & Tony have a rich history at the shore. So, with their wedding taking place in the city, naturally they wanted to pay homage to their strong ties to the ocean by having their engagement session in Cape May. But, to add an exciting twist, they wanted to do it in January. Honestly, this made perfect sense to me, as someone who has grown up on the water. The Beach isn’t just about summertime. It’s about a history with a big body of water, unchanging (yet always changing), that you can count on to deliver the same feelings of belonging no matter what the season. But, in January, it sure is cold! That’s why I liked Nicole and Tony so very much. They didn’t mind the subzero temperatures and the wild icy wind whipping off the ocean (well, maybe a little). We started at an abandoned basement bar at Congress Hall to get ourselves nice and toasty for what was in store. And from there, we just tried to stay out of the wind! They were incredibly good sports about the weather conditions and irrevocably committed to the Cape May shoreline regardless of the wintery bluster. That tells me they are in for a long and happy road together, since marriage is always bound to deliver a little cold breeze once in awhile. With their love as their focus, they kept the shivers at bay for nearly 2 hours – and that is a lot longer than I ever expected them to stick through it! So, if you can’t feel the gusts of chill in these photos, it’s truly because these two found a way to share a little fire between them.

Lauren and Mike attended an intimate wedding I shot in the Caribbean last year and I was thrilled to hear that they wanted to book a session with me when they traveled from their home in Mississippi to the east coast to visit family for the holidays. Though they were in a climate much less friendly to those used to balmy winters, the family took no time to warm up their hearts and enjoy each other in the brisk outside air during our shoot near the Brandywine River. Trust me – there was no shortage of frolicking, laughing, giggling or smiles – despite the weather. I was truly impressed with how well the girls handled the cold! Two words: Absolute Angels. And Lauren and Mike? Between their affection for each other and the adoration for their girls, well, they certainly had their love to keep them warm.

Equally as adventurous as they were affectionate, they took my word when I said – “Let’s just get in the car and follow the light!”. And so we did. With the golden September sun reflecting amazing light off the soybean fields, I was truly in heaven. We roamed around a stopped at every point of inspiration. Becky and Lou had absolutely no problem showing me how in love they were and didn’t even need time to warm up in front of the camera – their love and chemistry between one another was obvious from the first click. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Frank, the adorable little furry friend they just couldn’t imagine their session without! Frank was patient, charming and highly photogenic. I was thrilled they brought him along! Becky and Lou are getting married at Sweetwater Farms Bed and Breakfast – owned by the late Princess Grace of Monaco’s nephew – and one of my favorite places to photograph! After seeing how genuine and warm their love is, I am quite impatient for their big day at that beautiful estate.

Caitlin and Justin are sweet. Shy. Tender. Adorable. They’re getting married at Valenzano Winery this spring, which means we have similar tastes (um, yes, I love wine. Score). And so it is no surprise that they were so much fun at our session! We had to reschedule a number of times due to the weather, and finally we got a perfect day. It was worth the wait. Beautiful sunshine at one of my favorite Philadelphia locations, the Art Museum. We roamed around the majestic building as the sun went down over the Schuylkill River and I enjoyed capturing every little smooch and nuzzle. It was all so genuine, and because of that I am truly looking forward to this April.

Some people had to work on New Year’s Eve. I was one of them. Yet somehow, it didn’t really feel like work. Any day that I get to watch two amazingly kind and warm people say “I do” (especially when the energy from the holiday it falls upon is pulsing through the entire event, making it impossible not to feel the love and excitement along with all of the guests) I reiterate that it just doesn’t feel like work. I’m very pleased to say that was the case this New Year’s Eve as I got to capture Jeanine and Cory on their elegant holiday-style wedding day. The vibe was electric - and oh my – the dancing! I seriously have never seen a dance floor packed so tightly to the gills! It was a safe assumption to say that everyone that surrounded Jeanine and Cory that night were just as excited about their nuptials as they were. So congrats to the happy newlyweds and cheers to starting off the first moments of the New Year as husband and wife! I can’t think of any better way to make a wedding say “New Beginning” – and I was honored to both finish my 2011 and ring in 2012 with this wonderful couple!

Stacey and Micah have got some serious style – and their session showed off every bit of it. From their wardrobe, to their sense of adventure and the ideas they contributed to the session, I was in heaven. Touring the part of the city they call home, Northern Liberties, and finding endless opportunities to take advantage of amazing light and atmosphere was a breeze. Especially with these two leading the way! We found nooks and corners just about everywhere we turned and as soon as we nestled into each spot, Stacey and Micah relaxed into some honest, tender poses that showed their love story has been a long and treasured journey. I loved seeing them come alive with each other as we traveled around by foot. Finally, in a moment of photographer’s ecstasy, Micah took us to the Crane Building. Oh. Em. Gee. With incredible directional light coming in the windows of the old warehouse-converted-studio building I was beside myself. Then add the rooftop view – forget it. You could’ve stuck a fork in me, I was DONE. So a huge thanks (and congrats!) to Stacey and Micah on a great session! I can’t wait for this coming May in Bartram’s Garden when you two say “I do!”

Because it holds a customized flash drive of wedding images inside. And because it’s awesome. It’s a perfect little box of memories! I’ll shed not a tear upon laying my DVD-burning practice to rest as this stylish little upgrade takes its place in carefully archiving what will be one of the most memorable days of a couple’s life.

A had the great pleasure of photographing Penny earlier this month as the holiday season was just starting to take off. This wasn’t intended to be a “holiday shoot”, but we did get a little bit of Santa’s Workshop in a few shots. Mostly it was just to capture the endlessly charming expressions of Penny, a little gal who is full of smiles all day long and melts your heart from the first second she glances your way. Heaven help my son when they get older. He’s going to have one heck of a time resisting complete and utter smit. But on this day, it was me who was falling in love with her genuinely captivating smile. And, by the way, her mother (one of my dearest and oldest friends) tried to tell me Penny wasn’t a fan of the beach. Does this look like a kid who doesn’t want to get a little sandy? Please.
